On March 26, Catholic Charities, Diocese of Metuchen child care programs in Somerset, Warren and Morris counties joined communities across the globe to celebrate the importance of social-emotional learning (SEL) on the second annual International SEL Day centered on building bonds and reimagining community.
“It is only natural for us to participate in celebrating the second annual international SEL day,” said Child Care Service Area Director Krista Glynn. “Afterschool programs are a place for children to participate in social emotional opportunities through hands on activities, healthy connections with peers, and gain the necessary life skills for the future.
“During this difficult time, afterschool programs have never been more crucial for children to have a place where they feel safe and supported in out of school time. We continue to build on our incorporation of SEL into everything we do in our programs.”
To celebrate the day, activities specifically address the social emotional needs of children’s development and build on the children’s self-awareness, decision making, and relationship skills. For example, children participated in a “take what you need bulletin board,” create a “coping box,” set goals, and incorporate respect, kindness and empathy in their daily activities.
